नोट: यह कहानी लेखक की कल्पना पर आधारित है। यह किसी भी ऐतिहासिक घटना या वास्तविक जीवन के संदर्भों पर लागू नहीं होता है। कहानी इस बार कहानी के चरमोत्कर्ष हिस्से में थोड़े बदलाव के साथ रैखिक कथन का अनुसरण करती है। यह कहानी मेरे करीबी दोस्त आर्यन को एक यादगार श्रद्धांजलि है, जिनकी 24 अक्टूबर, 2022 को एक दुर्घटना में मृत्यु हो गई थी।

ऊटी, तमिलनाडु
रात 10:30:00 बजे
चूंकि ऊटी में नवंबर का महीना बहुत ठंडा होता है, उस रात बेहद ठंड थी। सिटी वेलिंगटन के बस टर्मिनल में, स्थानीय सिटी बस मेट्टुपालयम की अपनी अंतिम यात्रा पूरी करने के लिए तैयार थी। जब बस टर्मिनल से बस रवाना हुई तो बस यात्रियों से पूरी तरह भरी हुई थी। लेकिन जब बस रुकी तो एक-एक कर सभी हथियारबंद होकर जाने लगे।
ऐसे में अब अंतिम शहर जाने के लिए सिर्फ सात पड़ाव और बचे हैं। अब उस बस में कोई नहीं है। उस बस में एक ड्राइवर जो करीब 40 साल का था और एक बस कंडक्टर एक युवक था. बस का प्रबंधन तमिलनाडु के स्थानीय राज्य परिवहन द्वारा किया गया था। इसी तरह उस रात ड्राइवर और कंडक्टर के साथ बस उस रूट पर अकेली जा रही थी.
उस सर्द रात में उस रास्ते में कोई नहीं था। बस का ड्राइवर और कंडेक्टर ही जा रहा था। अब बस स्टॉप पर रुकती है। वहां कुल चार लोग बस में सवार हुए। इनमें एक 19 वर्षीय युवती दर्शनी भी थी। एक युवा जोड़ा जिसकी उम्र 20 और 25 साल थी। और दर्शिनी के स्कूल के सहपाठी आर्यन (चिन्नमपलयम, पोलाची का एक 20 वर्षीय युवा लड़का ), तो उस बस स्टॉप में कुल चार लोग सवार थे।
अब उस बस में ड्राइवर और कंडक्टर को मिलाकर कुल छह लोग सवार थे. बस में चढ़ते ही दर्शिनी बीच की सीट पर बैठ गई। आर्यन उसके सामने बैठ गया। वे युवा जोड़े ड्राइवर की सीट के पीछे बैठे थे। अब बस अपने गंतव्य तक पहुँचने के लिए केवल छह स्टॉप पीछे थी।
कोठागिरी-कुन्नूर रोड
12:45 पूर्वाह्न
चूंकि यह उस रूट की आखिरी बस है, इसलिए रात बहुत देर हो चुकी थी। इतना ही नहीं, बाहर बहुत ठंड थी और लगातार बर्फ गिर रही थी। सड़क पर कार, ट्रक और यहां तक मानव तस्करी जैसे वाहन नहीं हैं। केवल यही बस उस सड़क पर अकेली चल रही थी। चूंकि बस में कम लोग थे, इसलिए पूरी बस में सन्नाटा पसरा हुआ था। इतना ही नहीं चूंकि जिस इलाके में बस चल रही है वह घने जंगल और कई तीखे मोड़ों (पहाड़ी सड़क होने के कारण) से घिरा हुआ है। बस के इंजन की आवाज ही सुनाई दे रही थी।
जब बस घने जंगल और तीखे मोड़ों से गुजर रही थी तो अचानक बस ड्राइवर के मन में ख्याल आया, “आज ऐसा क्यों हो रहा है? आम तौर पर इस समय कोई यात्री नहीं होगा। लेकिन आज उनमें से इतने सारे क्यों हैं? वे कौन है? वे बस स्टॉप के बजाय बीच सड़क पर क्यों खड़े हैं?” वह मुँह में ही बड़बड़ाने लगा।
जब युवा कंडक्टर ने उसे बड़बड़ाते देखा तो उसने सड़क के सामने देखा। वहां दो लोग बीच सड़क पर खड़े होकर बस को रुकने का इशारा कर रहे थे। दरअसल, अब यह ड्राइवर की मर्जी है कि वह बस को रोके या नहीं। क्योंकि वे बस स्टॉप पर नहीं बल्कि बीच सड़क पर खड़े हैं।
लेकिन बाहर ठंड के मौसम के कारण और यह रास्ते से बाहर की आखिरी बस है, मान लीजिए कि अगर उनकी बस छूट जाती है, तो उन्हें नहीं पता कि उन्हें अगली बस के लिए कितनी देर प्रतीक्षा करनी होगी। तो हल्के दिल वाले कंडक्टर ने ड्राइवर से कहा कि वे उन्हें ऊपर चढ़ा दें, क्योंकि यह आखिरी बस थी।

"अगर हम उन्हें नहीं चढ़ाते हैं, तो कोई दूसरी बस नहीं होगी।" उसने कहा और बस को रोकने के लिए विनती की। चालक को शुरू में डर था कि वे चोर हो सकते हैं और वे उनके साथ कुछ बुरा कर सकते हैं। बाद में उसने उन दो लोगों के पास बस रोक दी जो घने जंगल में खड़े थे।
क्योंकि वहाँ बहुत अंधेरा था, और बस के अंदर और बाहर पर्याप्त रोशनी नहीं थी, वे स्पष्ट रूप से नहीं देख सकते थे कि बस के बाहर क्या है। इसलिए वे बाहर खड़े लोगों से बात नहीं कर सके। वे बस की पिछली सीढ़ियों से चढ़ रहे थे। सवार होने के बाद ही उन्हें पता चला कि बाहर 2 नहीं बल्कि 3 लोग खड़े थे।
और उन तीनों में से दो लोगों ने एक व्यक्ति को अपने बीच में पकड़ रखा था। तीनों ने ऊटी की बेहद पुरानी और ट्रेडिशनल ड्रेस पहन रखी थी. इसलिए वे अपना चेहरा ठीक से नहीं देख पाए। फिर भी दोनों लोगों के चेहरे बेहद फीके नजर आ रहे थे। बस में चढ़ते ही वे बस की आखिरी सीट पर बैठ गए।
अब बस में ड्राइवर और कंडक्टर को छोड़कर बाकी चार लोग उन्हें देखकर डरने लगे. बस के अंदर एक असहज और डरावना माहौल व्याप्त था।
जिस युवा कंडक्टर ने यह देखा, उन चार लोगों के लिए, यानी दर्शिनी, आर्यन और युवा जोड़ों ने उनसे कहा:
"डरो मत, इस कस्बे में कई शूटिंग फिल्म उद्योग हैं। इसलिए हो सकता है कि वे शूटिंग खत्म करके लौट आए हों ।' या हो सकता है कि उन्होंने ज्यादा शराब पी रखी हो। इसलिए उन दो लोगों ने उस आदमी को पकड़ रखा है। क्यों, क्या आपने उनकी वेशभूषा देखी है? उनके पास इसे बदलने का समय भी नहीं था। बीच का व्यक्ति भारी नशे लग रहा है। उसे होश ही नहीं था। मैंने ऐसे कई लोगों को बस कंडक्टर के रूप में देखा है। मेरे पास ऐसे कई अनुभव हैं।"
इसलिए उसने सभी से डरने के लिए नहीं कहा। यात्रियों को यह भी पता है कि शहर में कई ऐसे लोग हैं जो फिल्म उद्योग में हैं। तो उन्होंने सोचा कि, जैसा उसने कहा था वैसा ही था। तो एक को छोड़कर सभी निश्चिंत और सामान्य थे। और यह दर्शिनी थी।
दर्शिनी अभी भी घबराई हुई है। वह उन तीन लोगों को देखती रही जो पीछे बैठे थे। चूंकि अगले बस स्टॉप पर कोई नहीं है और चूंकि बस में कोई नहीं चढ़ा, इसलिए बस चलती रही। अब ड्राइवर के पीछे बैठे युवा जोड़े अपने स्टॉप पर पहुंचे तो उतर गए।
युवा जोड़ों को पता नहीं क्या था। लेकिन बस से उतरते ही उन्हें राहत महसूस हुई। उन्हें लगा जैसे वे किसी बड़े खतरे से बच गए हैं। जिस बस ने उन्हें उतारा। अब ड्राइवर, लेडी कंडक्टर और दर्शिनी। उनके सामने आर्यन बैठा था और वो तीन लोग जो बस की आखिरी सीट पर बैठे थे। अब बस में वे ही थे ।
जब वह बस जा रही थी तो अचानक स्वरा उठ खड़ी हुई। और आर्यन को देखा जो उसके सामने था, और कुछ पागलों की तरह चिल्लाने लगा। उसने उससे पूछा, “अरियान । मुझे सच बताओ। जब आप बस में चढ़े तो आपने मेरा पर्स ले लिया या नहीं। मेरा पर्स गायब है दा.... आपको इसे ले जाना चाहिए था। और उससे अपना पर्स वापस करने को कहा।
अचंभित आर्यन ने कहा, "हे दर्शिनी । मैं आपका पर्स कैसे ले सकता हूं? क्या तुम पागल हो? मैं आपके सामने बैठा हूं। मैं इसे कैसे ले सकता हूँ? मैंने इसे नहीं लिया।

अब आर्यन ने कहा, "मुझे कोई समस्या नहीं थी, दर्शिनी । क्योंकि मैंने इसे कभी नहीं लिया। अगर हम वहां भी जाते हैं, तो पुलिस कहेगी कि मैं निर्दोष हूं.”
अरुवनकाडु

अब बस अरुवनकाडु नामक अगले पड़ाव पर रुकी। दरवाज़ा खुलता है और दर्शिनी और आर्यन दोनों नीचे उतर गए। बस का दरवाजा बंद हो गया और बस जाने लगी। दर्शिनी लगातार बस को देख रही थी। जब बस उसकी नज़रों से ओझल हो गई, तभी उसे राहत महसूस हुई और उसने गहरी साँस ली।
आर्यन जो कि दर्शिनी के साथ सड़क पर खड़ा था, यह देखकर बहुत गुस्सा हो गया। उसने लड़की से पूछा, “हे दर्शिनी । तुम यहाँ क्यों खड़े हो ?" और थाने चलने को कहा। दर्शिनी ने कहा कि वे पुलिस के पास नहीं जा रहे हैं।
तब आर्यन ने
पूछा कि क्या वह सच में पागल है। उसने उससे पूछा, "यह मेरे लिए आखिरी बस है। मैं होमटाउन कैसे जा सकता हूं?"
"क्या आप नहीं जानते, आपको मुझे धन्यवाद देना चाहिए। मैंने तुम्हारी जान बचाई। दर्शिनी ने आर्यन से कहा। यह सुनकर आर्यन भ्रमित हो जाता है।
"क्या? आपने मेरी जान बचाई ! तुम क्या कह रहे हो? मैं समझ नहीं पाया, दर्शिनी ?” युवक ने कहा। उसके लिए महिला ने कहा, “अरियान। वो तीन लोग जो बीच रास्ते में बस में चढ़े, वो इंसान नहीं हैं."

“हाँ, उनके आने के बाद से मुझे अपनी शंका थी। मुझे लग रहा था कि कुछ गलत था। इसलिए मैंने मुड़कर उन्हें लगातार देखा। तभी अचानक बस में हवा का झोंका आ गया। और उनके कपड़े थोड़े ऊपर उठे हुए थे। उस समय मैंने उन्हें देखा, उनके पैर नहीं हैं। पहले मैंने सोचा कि यह कोई कल्पना या भ्रम होगा। लेकिन फिर जब मैंने इसे ध्यान से देखा, तभी मुझे पता चला कि यह कोई इंसान नहीं है। यह कुछ और है। दर्शिनी की यह बात सुनकर आर्यन बुरी तरह चौंक गया और तनाव में आ गया।

आर्यन और दर्शिनी दोनों घर चले गए।

अब, अगले दिन, 15 नवंबर, 2018 की सुबह, वेलिंगटन में बस टर्मिनल के अधिकारियों ने देखा कि बस अपने गंतव्य तक नहीं पहुँची। इतना ही नहीं बस को आखिरी बार तब देखा गया था जब वह गंतव्य से चार स्टॉप पहले थी। उसके बाद बस को किसी ने नहीं देखा ।
उन्होंने वेलिंगटन पुलिस स्टेशन में एक आधिकारिक शिकायत दर्ज की कि: "बस और चालक दल के सदस्य गायब थे।" तो उन्होंने सभी थानों को बस के क्रॉस होने की सूचना दी। इस तरह, 14 नवंबर की रात सूचना उस थाने में आई जहां दर्शिनी और आर्यन ने शिकायत की।
तुरंत पुलिस अधिकारी ने दोनों को बुलाया और उस रात जो हुआ उसका बयान दर्ज किया। उसके बाद यह खबर पूरे ऊटी में फैलने लगी। दर्शिनी और आर्यन ने मैगज़ीन को इंटरव्यू देना शुरू किया। ये उस दिन के अखबारों की सुर्खियां थीं। अफवाहों ने कहा कि बस को टेलीपोर्ट किया गया था।
लेकिन अगले दिन यानी घटना के दो दिन बाद बस का ठिकाना मिल गया। जहां से बस मिली थी....उस जगह से 85 किमी दूर जहां महिला और युवक दोनों उतरे थे। यानी विपरीत दिशा में जहां बस वास्तव में जाना चाहती है, और वह भी भवानी नदी में डूबी हुई स्थिति में मिली। साथ ही उस बस में पांच लाशें भी थीं।
उन्होंने तुरंत बस को नदी से बाहर निकाल लिया। अब डॉक्टर, पुलिस और अन्य लोग थे। पांचों शवों को बस से बाहर निकाला गया। यह देख वहां खड़े सभी लोग हैरान रह गए। क्यों, क्योंकि उन पांच लाशों में से सिर्फ ड्राइवर और कंडक्टर की लाशें ही सही थीं। और सामान्य । लेकिन उन तीनों लोगों के शव बेहद सड़ी-गली हालत में थे।
यानी कई दिनों तक, एक ही दिन में जैसे छोड़ दिया गया था।

It was a very cold night, as November is a very cold month in Ooty. At the City Wellington bus terminal, the local city bus was ready to complete its final journey to Mettupalayam. When the bus departed the terminal, it was packed with passengers. But when the bus stopped, everyone started leaving one by one, armed with weapons
With only seven stops left to reach the final city, the bus was now empty. The bus was carrying a driver in his 40s and a young conductor. The bus was managed by the local Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation. That night, the bus was the only one traveling on the route with a driver and conductor.
There was no one on the road that cold night. Only the bus driver and conductor were traveling. The bus stopped at a bus stop. Four people boarded the bus. As the bus passed through dense woods and sharp turns, the driver suddenly wondered, "Why is this happening today? Normally, there wouldn't be any passengers at this time. But why are there so many of them today? Who are they? Why are they standing in the middle of the road instead of at the bus stop?" he muttered to himself.
When the young conductor heard him muttering, he looked across the street. There were two men standing in the middle of the road, signaling for the bus to stop. Actually, it was up to the driver whether to stop or not, because they were standing in the middle of the road, not at a bus stop.
But because it was cold outside and it was the last bus on the route, suppose they missed their bus, they didn't know how long they would have to wait for the next one. So the light-hearted conductor told the driver to let them get on, since it was the last bus.

Because it was so dark, and there wasn't enough light inside or outside the bus, they couldn't clearly see what was outside. So they couldn't talk to the people standing outside. They boarded the bus from the back stairs. Only after boarding did they realize there were three people standing outside, not two.
Two of the three men were holding a man between them. All three were wearing ancient, traditional Ooty clothing, so they couldn't see their faces clearly. Even so, the two men's faces looked very pale. Once they boarded the bus, they sat on the last seat.
Now, the bus's four passengers, except the driver and conductor, were terrified by the sight of them. An uneasy and frightening atmosphere prevailed inside the bus.
The young conductor who saw this said to the four people, i.e. Darshini, Aryan and the young couples:
"Don't worry, there are a lot of film industries shooting in this town. So maybe they've just finished shooting and returned." Or maybe they've been drinking too much. So no one will suspect us and most importantly those three people. After Janani and Adhithya, you are one of my closest friends from our school days. That's why only I saved you. Because I did not want to lose a precious soul" said Darshini.
And what Aryan immediately said was, "Then you could have told the bus crew member. We could have saved them too, Darshini."
To that, Darshini said: “I already told that conductor, Aryan. But when I told him, he said it was my illusion. And he also said that I should not be afraid. Now Aryan asked her: “Okay. What can we do now?”

But the next day, two days after the incident, the bus was found. It was found 85 km from where the woman and the young man had gotten off. In the opposite direction to where the bus was originally supposed to be heading, and it was found submerged in the Bhavani River. Five bodies were also inside.
They immediately pulled the bus out of the river. Now there were doctors, police, and others. The five bodies were pulled from the bus. Everyone standing there was shocked. Why? Because out of the five bodies, only the driver and conductor were intact. And normal. But the bodies of those three people were in a very decomposed state.
